Things to do in winter in Niagara Falls

Niagara Falls is typically a spring or summer destination. That’s when the weather is most favorable and when you can explore the surrounding green nature. However, visitors tend to forget that nature is just as beautiful in the winter. Plus, it’s not like the park shuts down; there are still plenty of fun attractions to enjoy, both indoors and outdoors.

You’ll see how breathtaking the waterfalls look in winter, enjoy a light festival, learn Niagara Parks’ history, and more. There are numerous things to do in winter in Niagara Falls!

1. Journey Behind the Falls

Ever wanted to see a waterfall up close? You’ve got to try out Journey Behind the Falls! Open all year long, this attraction takes you deep into Niagara Falls’ bedrock, 125 feet down. Wander through 130-year-old tunnels and slowly make your way to the observation deck. It is positioned right behind (and underneath) the falls. You’ll hear Horseshoe Falls before you even make it out onto the observation deck – and feel its vibrations as well!

Out on the deck, you’re in for a treat: Niagara Falls’s beautiful white landscape, snow-covered rocks, and a mighty ‘frozen’ waterfall. It’s a stunning picture you can only really see in the winter, straight out of a scene from the North Pole.

While out there, try to get a good look at the waterfall – it only appears frozen. There is a thin sheet of ice over the rushing water, yes, formed by the mist and spray freezing, but the water still flows under this crust of ice. In fact, the falls never fully freeze.

2. Experience the Winter Festival of Lights

Niagara Falls in winter is home to a gorgeous, free festival. It is called The Winter Festival of Lights! As Canada’s largest outdoor light festival, the event hosts countless art installations lighting up the sky. The snowy backdrop only makes the experience more gorgeous. Both kids and adults will love the event.

The light installations aren’t confined to the national park. Instead, you’ll find them throughout the city of Niagara Falls and its surrounding areas. But don’t worry, you’ll have time to see them all – the sun sets early in Niagara Falls in winter, meaning the lights come on soon!

Here’s the full list of the most popular light shows:

  • The Grand View always provides great views of the falls, but during the Winter Festival of Lights, you’ll get the added bonus of the light fixtures.
  • Clifton Hill is a major tourist destination just next to the Grand View, and now, with the added bonus of the light show!
  • Queen Victoria Place is right next to the snow-covered Queen Victoria Park (also worth a visit). It hosts nature-inspired installations.
  • City Path is underneath Skylon Tower. It provides a relaxing pathway with several light installations along the way.
  • Fallsview Boulevard is just south of the City Path – it probably makes sense to see those two together!
  • The Great Canadian North is right before the Dufferin Islands. It features typical Canadian-themed displays.
  • The Dufferin Islands are a tranquil, quiet area south of the city. There are many pretty animal-inspired light fixtures.
  • Niagara Parkway is a scenic drive alongside the Niagara River, now made even more scenic with charming light additions.
  • Lundy’s Lane takes you through the entire city of Niagara Falls. Explore the city and view the gorgeous light fixtures at the same time!

Besides the light installations, make sure you also see the Falls’ winter light show! The waterfalls come alive with dazzling multi-color light shows all year long. The winter shows are particularly stunning. You can see vibrant colors reflected beautifully off the snowy landscape.

Finally, Niagara Falls in winter has one last special treat waiting for you: a fireworks display! From late November to early December, there’ll be a huge fireworks show over the waterfalls, making for gorgeous views both on and above the water.

3. Take in panoramic views from the Niagara SkyWheel

Niagara Falls’ three waterfalls (Horseshoe, American, and Bridal Veil Falls) are a stunning sight during every part of the year. They are especially beautiful during winter. The rushing white spray beautifully complements the snowy surroundings. The nearby white-covered trees look just like a Christmas card.

Your best bet for taking in the three iconic falls is the Niagara SkyWheel – Canada’s largest observation wheel, towering at 53 meters (175 feet) high. From there, you’ll have sweeping views over Horseshoe Falls, American Falls, and the Niagara River. You’ll also be able to see Niagara Parks and other popular landmarks. Plus, you’ll also get a good look at the city of Niagara Falls in the winter! The ride lasts between 8 and 12 minutes. You should be completely comfortable while inside the enclosed gondolas. They’re equipped with state-of-the-art heating, and are actually a good way to escape the cold. Access to the Niagara SkyWheel is included in the Clifton Hill Fun Pass!

4. Learn about Niagara Falls’ history in The World Changed Here Pavilion

If you’re interested in the national park’s history and want to warm up a little bit, visit The World Changed Here Pavilion. It’s a great educational exhibition to complement all the sightseeing!

Right at the beginning, there’ll be an eight-minute movie about the beginning of Canada’s oldest state park. You’ll learn about the first European to see the Falls, Frenchman Father Louis Hennepin. Find out how Napoleon’s brother honeymooned there with his bride. You can also hear about the vital role Nikola Tesla played in harnessing the Falls’s hydraulic power. The massive power of the crashing waterfalls is a great source of renewable energy. The world’s first large-scale hydroelectric generating station was opened in 1895 in Niagara Falls. In 1896, Nikola Tesla proved he could transmit electricity over long distances right there in Niagara Falls. This was the first commercial use of the alternating current (AC) induction motor now used around the world.

5. Find a tropical paradise at the Floral Showhouse and the Butterfly Conservatory

If you’ve had your fill of snow, wander into the Floral Showhouse: an indoor garden paradise in the midst of winter!

There are three main display houses, and the North and Center houses host exhibits that constantly change throughout the year. In fact, 20,000 plants are grown annually! You’ll likely never see the same arrangements twice. This is because horticultural experts constantly refresh the floral displays. Head to the South House for the permanent exhibit: succulents, palms, ferns, house plants, and most beautiful of all, orchids. Widely praised for their elegance and color, the orchids really make the entire exhibit come alive, creating a warm, vibrant oasis.

Your other option for indoor nature sightseeing is the Butterfly Conservatory. Step inside 180 meters of winding paths surrounded by tropical vegetation and spend an afternoon with 2,000 butterflies! The beautiful creatures fly free within the pavilion, lighting from tree to flower to feeding tray. What better way to warm up from the cold? Make sure to also check the Emergence Window. This is a fascinating exhibit where you’ll see the pupa stage in a butterfly’s life cycle. If you’re lucky, you’ll even see the butterfly emerging from the pupa for its first flight!

6. Last but not least – enjoy the beautiful winter nature

Niagara Falls in winter is an amazing time to visit purely for the picturesque landscape. Wherever you turn, you’ll see snowy expanses, crystalline tree branches, and, most likely, roaring waterfalls. For starters, visit Riverside Patio, a pedestrian promenade at the base of Horseshoes Falls. Here, you’ll be looking directly at American Falls, with a great viewpoint of the rushing (or frozen) waterfalls pouring into the river. Breathe in the crisp winter air and admire the white landscape; it’s not often you see such stunning, vast wintery scenes.

It’s also not a bad idea to stroll around Goat Island. The national park will likely be covered in snow, making for a leisurely stroll with picturesque views. The soft crunch of your shoes across the snowy paths will calm your nerves, and your eyes will relax while looking at the tranquil white expanses. Plus, you’ll, of course, also see the famous American and Bridal Veil Falls, as well as a statue of Nikola Tesla at Stedman’s Bluff. Such sights in such a calming environment; it’s an ideal way to spend a winter’s day. If you don’t want to miss anything, enjoy a unique view from above on the Niagara Falls helicopter tour!

7. Conclusion: Is it worth visiting Niagara Falls in winter?

When you first think of Niagara Falls in winter, it might not sound like the most appealing vacation. After all, the days are shorter, and the water spray is colder. But the national park holds a special charm in the wintertime. The snowy landscape turns Niagara Falls into a winter wonderland. The landscape is full of crystalized trees, frozen falls, and gorgeous light shows.

In our opinion, a winter trip to Niagara Falls is well worth the visit. If you get cold, you can always dip inside indoor exhibits or grab a hot chocolate. In the meantime, stroll around the national park and soak in winter’s natural beauty.
